Introducing LETS - Library E-Tutorial for
 Students

If you have visited the Library over the past number of months, you might have noticed our white board listing the information literacy workshops and classes taking place on a daily basis.  These workshops and classes are delivered by our team of Subject Librarians. The team work closely with individual lecturers to create opportunities for students to develop their knowledge and skills in finding, using and evaluating information.  Since the beginning of the academic year, we have run over 150 workshops which have been attended by students across all faculties and at all levels of study.

To enhance the face-to-face support we offer to undergraduate students we have developed LETS (Library E-tutorial for students).

Students can use LETS at their own pace, and at a time that suits them. It comprises four related, yet independent modules which focus on the key stages of information seeking, evaluation and use.

LETS helps students to:

§

Effectively plan their research in order to find the best available resources

§

Understand the variety of information sources available to them and when to use them

§

Choose the best  tools available to find quality information

§

Evaluate information sources

§

Cite and reference correctly

LETS has been designed and developed in such a way to allow us to enhance and update modules as appropriate. We are also developing a moodle assessment which can be used with LETS. At present students can take a short “test” at the end of each module. We’ve included some simulated searches so students can see how to search for a specific journal title, search a library database for articles, and search the library catalogue. It also includes a visual time-line which helps students understand how information evolves over time and is disseminated.

Feedback to date has been extremely positive.  Students have commented:

"I've just had a quick read through LETS and I've learned
more in the last ten minutes than I had previously picked up
by trial and error..."

"Many thanks for the wonderful tutorial, it was especially
helpful in searching correctly for articles"

"I am not a new student and still learnt something valuable"

"For beginners the LETS will be a godsend"

We welcome feedback on LETS
and any suggestions on how we can improve the tutorial. If you have any questions, please contact your Subject Librarian.
