Beyond your reading list

  Topic searching

Up until now you may have relied on the contents of your reading list to gather information for your assignments. But what do you do when you are asked to choose a topic of your own or given a scenario or a problem to solve? In these cases there are no reading lists provided so it is up to you to find appropriate information yourself. This involves searching library resources such as the catalogue (for books mainly) and the electronic databases (for journal articles mainly).

Below are links to resources to help you to use the catalogue and electronic databases. Before you look at those though, remember to always think about your topic before you begin searching.  See Search Strategies in LETSbegin if you need a refresher.

   Library catalogue

to find books, official publications and other printed material
   (take a look at the
tutorial on how to use the library catalogue)

   Electronic databases

to search for journal articles (look at Using Databases)
